They were all
afraid of him, girls from good families, girls who did things in the dark.
Ranjit had the
look of a murderer with icy grey eyes.
Recently he had come to sit at our corner for hours on end, where we
usually met to pass the hour between work and supper; or after the movies to
re-enact the dialogue and the action; or just to pass the weekends when we had
nothing else to do: gathering the events of the day from the neighbourhood; sometimes discussing what was
in the newspapers. And Ranjit
sent a shiver down her spine every time she passed by the corner - that made
Ruwaida shudder even over supper. …
