BAHIA

BAHIA
© Farouk Asvat

Green-sea-in-motion eyes skittish with laughter, assumed a moist sadness, when Bahia put on her contactlenses.  She gave her layered short hair one last brush in the mirror; and mannequined through the passage looking over her right shoulder to the tip of her right heel to make sure everything was perfect.  In the lounge she looked into the mirror inscribed in Arabic: Allah Muhammed and the oath of belief in Islam.  If God happened to be in that mirror He would have been proud of the mischievous determination staring into His eyes, and might have brought some happiness to this godforsaken land.  And I, mere mortal man, fell the first night I set eyes upon her credulous eyes in their dimly-lit lounge, as she let my penetrating gaze into her very own soul, without revealing her feelings in the matter, of course.  ...

FROM A CORNER

FROM A CORNER
© Farouk Asvat

They were all afraid of him, girls from good families, girls who did things in the dark.

Ranjit had the look of a murderer with icy grey eyes.  Recently he had come to sit at our corner for hours on end, where we usually met to pass the hour between work and supper; or after the movies to re-enact the dialogue and the action; or just to pass the weekends when we had nothing else to do: gathering the events of the day from the neighbourhood; sometimes discussing what was in the newspapers.  And Ranjit sent a shiver down her spine every time she passed by the corner - that made Ruwaida shudder even over supper.

A LIFE COME TRUE

A LIFE COME TRUE
© Farouk Asvat

The doctor gave one look at him and pronounced him dead.  His gums looked like bled tuna fish; he was gasping, smelling of dried apricot, a child's rattle playing in his throat.  He was no god, no worker of miracles, but looking at him, he shoved a needle into his vein, setting up the plumbing system: normal saline in one arm, fresh dried plasma in the other.  He ordered oxygen and suction from a nursing staff that had seen so many deaths, another one wouldn't matter, young that the patient was.  He took blood samples, ordered "very urgent uncrossmatched blood" (which he knew would take hours coming from the white hospital on the other side of the city), put him in a MAST suit, called the surgeons, and phoned theatre to be ready for an op.  …
